The aeration basin is one of the critical components in a wastewater treatment plant. This area of the plant forms the nitrification process of the wastewater treatment plant.

Nitrification is the conversion of ammonia (NH3) to nitrate (NO3). How is this done? This is a two-step  process that is done with oxygen and two types of bacteria, Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, known collectively as the nitrifiers.  Ammonia (NH3) + Oxygen (O2) + Alkalinity + Nitrosomonas = Nitrite (NO2).  Nitrite (NO2) + Oxygen(O2) + Alkalinity + Nitrobacter = Nitrate (NO3) Nitrite (NO2) is the unstable form of nitrogen and is easily converted because it does not wish to be in this form. The total conversion of ammonia (NH3) to nitrate (N03) takes 4.6 parts oxygen and 7.1 parts alkalinity to convert 1 part ammonia (NH3).

The delivery of oxygen to this process is critical for the nitrification process. Reliable and accurate dissolved oxygen monitoring will deliver both process improvement and operational cost savings to the plant. By    having reliable and accurate measurement from the dissolved oxygen    system the values can form part of a closed loop control system to control blower operation. Control of the blowers through a closed loop control system ensures that energy costs associated with operating the blowers can be reduced. This can also translate into less ongoing costs of maintenance and component replacements to the blowers over time.

Operating costs for aeration in wastewater treatment plants can account for up to 70% of the running costs. Reliable, accurate and maintenance free dissolved oxygen measurement combined with closed loop control for the blowers can dramatically reduce this energy costs associated with blower operation and provide better control of the process. The Royce Technologies Galvanic Dissolved Oxygen Monitoring Systems are field proven over many years of operation to provide the results    expected by operators. The cleaning system offered by Royce Technologies ensures that the sensor operates accurately, reliably and without any attention by plant staff

Royce Technologies offer fast and accurate on-line and portable dissolved oxygen meter using both galvanic membrane and optical measurement technologies.
